Are you ready for the second biggest event of the year?  Aside from the annual Running Festival, this event is the most talked about weekend amongst the Runners Club but goes against the friendly nature of the club itself. Yes, that’s right the ‘Girls Weekend’ will once again be held on the weekend of 21 & 22 September 2013 in conjunction with the Blackmore’s Sydney Running Festival and organisers need to know numbers. As the title states the ‘Girls Weekend’ has only one mandatory rule, you need to be female to attend. This is the one and only act of discrimination on the running calendar, so please don’t let the event turn you off this magnificent club and its members. Any ladies interested in attending need to talk to Sharon Fahy, Jane Fairgrieve or Helen Roberts for more information. This year the production South Pacific will be performed at the Sydney Opera House the same weekend and is one of the main attractions for this year’s trip. Tickets are now on sale so for those women who wish to attend the theatre so please contact Helen Roberts on 0414591228 by Wednesday 1 May 2013 to confirm numbers.

Congratulations to Liz Simpson and Mitch Williamson who whilst travelling to Queensland for a well earned holiday called into Forster and competed in the Forster Gloria Jeans 5k Run for Fun. Mitch won the event in a time of 15:30 and Liz 5th overall was the 2nd female home in a very impressive 18:29. Not a bad way to break up the trip, we are generally satisfied by calling into Maccas once or thrice. Well done guys hope you told everyone up there about the Orange Running Festival?

Last Sunday’s handicap run out at Clergate was a watch free event. Runners/walkers record their estimated time for either the 3k, 5k or 10k course prior to the run and set off in an attempt to get home as close to the estimated time as possible. The winner was Laura Auberson who predicted her 5k effort would take 22:30; Laura crossed the line in 22:31. Laura obviously knows her average running speed quite well, very impressive 1 second off. The novelty of the watch free run gives runners added motivation to try that little bit harder with the majority of runners coming  in under their estimated times.

82 runners/walkers tackled Wednesdays 3k handicap run with a lot of new faces venturing down for what’s to become their weekly afternoon fix. It was great to see a lot of the boys and girls encouraging the younger kids to keep going. PB’s for this week were Courtney Chapman 20 seconds, Ethan McArdle 1minute 10 seconds, Jack Daintith 5 seconds and Jessie Dean 9 seconds.

With a number of fun runs coming up in the month of May around the Central West the Orange Runners Club is calling on its members to support the events below.

WINNING SMILE: Runners Club vice-president Jane Fairgrieve grins as she runs. Perhaps she’s thinking of the girls weekend away?
