Successful trip to Canberra
Article by Matt Dean
Once again the Australian Running Festival in Canberra proved to be a big attraction for Orange Runners Club members and as usual the Orange runners made a mark in their chosen events. Sunday’s events consisted of a half and full marathon; with John Moss (4.34:43) and Richard Eggleston (4.05:15) both taking on the 42.2k course. In the half marathon Brian Rix finished 1st in his age group and Daryl Roweth ran a very respectable 1.35:14. On Saturday morning the 5 & 10k events took place; In the 10k Jack Daintith and Estelle Dean both finished 3rd in their respective age groups; while in the 5k Kinisha Roweth and Glenys Rosser topped their age groups, Jessie Dean finished strong to claim 3rd in the 0-12 age group. Both Sharon and Graeme Fahy claimed 9th place in the 5k, a very sound effort by the Orange Runners Club.
Last Sunday’s Botanic Gardens handicap was held in ideal conditions, numbers were a little light on given the club’s commitment to the Running Festival in Canberra. Bailey Goransson was the handicap winner; Bailey completed the preferred 3.2k (2 laps) in 14:41. Amber Rich was the sole female to complete the 8K (5 laps) while Joel Kitto lead a 9 strong male contingent home. Only 3 endurance athletes in Jane Fairgreive, Brian Sharp and Gregor Hamm took on 6.4k (4 laps) while the rest of the 60 odd runners/walkers chose from 1 to 3 laps for their Sunday morning hit out.
Wednesday’s handicap was also light on for numbers due to the school holidays with only 58 runners/walkers making it down for 3 laps around Elephant Park. It was a couple of male students Connor Whiteley and Kyle Ostini who scorched the track and in doing so Connor recorded a 13 second Pb. Unfortunately the boys were not wearing their timing chips so a time for their efforts was not recorded. This left an opening for yours truly to claim the handicap win by default. Olivia Goodlock ran a very impressive 14:11 to post a 1 minute 14 second Pb while Clarissa Lark ran 16:52 for a massive 1 minute 16 second Pb.
Over the Easter Long weekend club veteran John West competed in the Australian Masters Athletics Championships in Canberra. In the 60-64 age category John managed silver in the 5000m walk a massive 4minute 40 seconds quicker than his effort last year and missed out on silver in the 1500m by 0.2 seconds. In the throwing events he managed 7th in javelin, 7th in the weight throw, 8th in the hammer throw, 10th in the shot put and 11th in the discus. He also managed a respectable 8th placing in the Throws Pentathlon. Well done John.
