With the mercury approaching 35 degrees, on Sunday at Bulgas Road runners reaching the top of the final hill exclaimed ‘hot out there today!’ This was the understatement of the day.
Despite the heat 68 runners took on the challenging course. The ever consistent trio of Amber Rich, Tanya Connolly and Ella Lamrock didn’t want to stay too long out in the heat so were very fast to the turn around to bring home the 3km. Rikky and Fred Bangert were first across the line ahead of Blake Gleeson for the men.
In the 5km Karen Neal, Kelly Gleeson and Danielle Kingberg led a very determined female field including cruiser President Renai. Nice effort put in by Mel Bolton who is improving each week.
Rehabilitated Iain McLean made it all look easy, sailing past others in the 5km in a time of 22.03 with Alistair steaming away to take 2nd from Hughie D. Brian Rix finished out the 5km pack. Good to see Wayne Stewart back from a trip to a slightly cooler Tasmania. We hope John Hannan continued his lie down on Sunday afternoon after his effort on the hills.
Leanne Cororan took the 10km honours from park run fans Jane Fairgrieve and Kim Jarvis. Russell Tym, Basil Baldwin, Stephen ‘Blackie’ Blackwood were the only males to run the 10km.
Camel packs were at the ready for those crazy enough to head out for the 14km which Sam Collins completed in a neat time of 1.09. Sam was also the overall winner on Sunday. We hope WHS officer John Moss had plenty of water and sunscreen for his efforts in the longer option.
On Wednesday evening Kietta Raye Shaw was the winner. Edward Maclean’s time of 12.48 was the only PB on the day. The heat didn’t bother the training pack who clocked up more than the 3km. Well done to Rikky Bangert and Leanne Corcoran for their top placings.
