Parties, Awards and Running
With the end of the year fast approaching and 2011 not far away it was time for the Orange Runners Club to hold its annual Christmas Party and Awards night. Once again it was held at Emus Rugby Club last Saturday night with the organisation done wonderfully by Rhonda Williams. A large number of members enjoyed a great meal and then for those of us who were game enough to dance to music supplied by Aftershock Records.
During the night the club also held its Presentation of Awards to recognise outstanding achievements by club members during the 2010 season.
The following awards went to:-
RUNNER OF THE YEAR – Melissa Watson
JUNIOR RUNNER OF THE YEAR – Kyle Ostini
MOST IMPROVED – Kay Davis (81 second Improvement per Km)
MOST CONSISTANT RUNNER SUNDAY RUNS – Kim Jarvis
MOST CONSISTANT JUNIOR – Connor Whiteley
MOST CONSISTANT RUNNER WEDNESDAY RUNS – John West
Well done to all the award winners, well deserved by all with some outstanding achievements. It has to be noted that John West is one of the older members of the club having joined in the late 1970’s and has nearly 900 runs, he is also now as he puts it “A Walker” but still strives to improve his times whenever he can.
On the night a DVD of the Clubs home town runs and other runs around the state attended by club members during the 2010 season was shown. This was put together by Bryce Ostini. Bryce has copies of the DVD available for $5 each, with the proceeds going to Anson Street School. If you would like a copy please see Bryce at next Wednesday’s run and bring your money.
Last Sundays run was held at Elephant Park over the longer 1.6km or 1 mile course, with one to five laps ( 8km) in the offering. This was also the morning after our Presentation Night and a much earlier start at 9am. It was good to see nearly all the people who attend the night before front up for a run or walk to loosen up after all the dancing etc.
The Winner on the day was Pam Fullgrabe with a time of 37min 21sec for the 6.4 kms.
Just to show that the award for Most Improved was no fluke, Kay Davis completed the 8kms in 45mins 10secs, a new PB and taking a huge 2 minutes off her previous best. Looks like Kay is after that award again in 2011.
On the same day Frank Ostini was in Canberra competing in the Canberra Half Ironman. With all the flooding down that way the swim leg in Lake Burley Griffin was changed to a short 4km run followed by a 90km bike ride then a 21 km run (Half Marathon). Frank completed the Half Ironman in a time of – 4 hours 57 minutes. Well done Frank on a great effort.
Wednesdays run was also held at Elephant Park but over the shorter 1km course with up to 3 laps in the offering. There were 64 runners and walkers of all ages all out to try and improve their times from previous weeks. However the winner on the day was one of our younger juniors in Emily Pell who completed the 3kms in 18mins 42sec. This was also a new PB for Emily by 2 minutes. Others to achieve PB’s were – Katie Hennessy – 1 min 30 sec, Tiffany Roweth – 2 minutes, and the ever consistent Daryl Roweth – 4 sec. Lookout for the Handicapper getting to Daryl in the very near future.
Certificates were also awarded to club members for achieving Run Milestones – Dan Daley 100 Runs, Helen Roberts 200 Runs and Linda Chapman 200 runs.
PLEASE NOTE – This Sundays Run has been changed from Bulgas Road due to water over the crossing below Suma Park Dam and will now be held at Kinross Forest. Distances of 2km 4.8km and 9km are on offer with a 9am Start. Hopefully the weather will be a little kinder this time around and not rain until well after we are finished. Watch out for signs for the change of venue.
Don’t forget the Colour City Fun Run is fast approaching. The first weekend in March 2011 is not that far away. You should all be training for your different distances by now. It is great to see The Athletes Foot is one of the sponsors for this event.
Finally, with next Sunday being Boxing Day and no Club Run scheduled, if anyone still wants to go for a run and burn off some of the Christmas cheer be at Elephant Park at 9am and I’m sure someone will be there to run with you for a lap or two.
Looking forward to seeing everyone out and running during the holidays, may your roads be smooth, your times are PB’s and the weather kind to you all. See you all in 2011.
