The athletics world is buzzing at the moment with the announcement that the worlds fastest man, Usain Bolt will be appearing downunder to race in the new Athletics Australia Nitro Series!

The series begins in Melbourne on February 4, 2017.

Bolt Launches Nitro Athletics

The world’s greatest athlete, Usain Bolt, will compete and captain the ‘Bolt All-Stars’ in a new sports entertainment series set to revolutionise global track and field.
A high energy, team-based competition, Nitro Athletics will see the stars of Australian and international athletics compete across three nights of blockbuster entertainment at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium in February 2017.  Read more.

World Masters Review

NSW athletes started the World Masters Championships in Perth in fine style with Don Mathewson (Hills) winning the first event of the program, the men’s 70 years 8km cross country.

Mathewson, a multiple gold medalist at previous World Championships, won in 34min:25.12 from fellow Australian Jim Langford.

Rosemary Roediger almost made it a Hills double in the cross country, finishing second in the women’s 60 years 8km in 36min:13.37.

Guide to Nitro Athletics

Nitro Athletics Melbourne will feature six teams of 24 athletes (12 women and 12 men). Teams will come from Australia and internationally and will be announced in the coming weeks.
Nitro Athletics will be like no athletics competition seen before and will not just feature traditional events – this will be a different spin on traditional athletics and will include a mix of power, endurance, technique and teamwork disciplines across sprints, distance, field and para-athletics events.  Read more.

Events

NSW Relay Championships

State Relays will be held on 26th & 27th November at the Blacktown International SportsPark. This event is the premier team based competition in NSW and is the envy of other states. Clubs form teams in both track and field events in junior, open and masters age groups. If you are interested in being part of the spectacle and helping your club beat it’s rivals, talk to your club today!

TRACKrun

This event, put on by Athletics NSW & Run NSW, is designed for people of all abilities to try running on the track over the classic 3k distance and is a great way to get speed into your legs for all those longer races.
3K is a distance that suits all levels and all ages particularly those that regularly compete in parkrun events. TRACKrun will feature 5-6 graded races based on your entry time.

All-comers @ Blacktown

The competition at Blacktown in the twilight hours of Friday 18th November will be a sprinter’s delight with the 100m, 200m, 400m and sprint hurdles on offer at the fast Blacktown track. The fast twitch fibres will also be in action in the high jump and triple jump. Online entry closes midnight Wednesday 16th November.

Treloar Shield 3 & NSW 3000m Champs

The third instalment of the Treloar Shield is to be held on Saturday 12 November at SOPAC. The afternoon will start from 3pm with the first 3000m race scheduled for 6.30pm. Online entry closes midnight Thursday 10 November.

Treloar Shield 4

Randwick Botany Harriers are hosting the 4th round of the Treloar Shield on Saturday 19th November at E.S. Marks Field. The meet is a twilight competition scheduled to start at 4pm and finish at 8pm. Events on offer include 800m, 3000m, 5000m, 200/400m hurdles, 1500/3000/5000m walks, long jump, shot put, and javelin. Online entry closes midnight Thursday 17th November.

Albie Thomas & Treloar Shield 5

The Albie Thomas Mile returns to The Crest in 2016, with Jordan Gusman set to headline a cracking field set to go sub-4 for the second consecutive year. Gusman will defend his 2015 title on 10 December, chasing a total prize pool of over $3,500. The evening honours the memory of Albie Thomas, one of Australia’s greatest-ever runners and the first Australian to break the 4-minute mile barrier.

Help the Northern Beaches get a much needed upgrade to the Narrabeen Track & Field Facility

Help the Northern Beaches secure funding for a much needed upgrade to the track at Narrabeen by signing the online petition here.
An upgrade to this facility will allow a lot more competitions to be held in the Northern Beaches, which would be a great result for the sport of athletics!

Coaching

Level 2 Recreational Running Coach

This course trains coaches to develop the fundamental technical and strategic skills for runners training for 5km through to ultra-marathon events.  It covers topics such as warm ups, session planning and designing training programs. The course also develops the coach’s skills in managing groups of varied skill levels from novice through to elite.

Level 1: Community Athletics Coach

This is the entry level for all Accredited Athletic Coaches.  The fundamental skills of running, jumping & throwing are introduced as well as exploring how to engage athletes in long term participation and how to coach skills to beginner athletes.
