Run Into the New Year
Welcome everyone to a new and exciting year of running or walking with the Orange Runners Club. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas period with their families and are looking forward to another big year of personal goals and PB’s along the way.
Before we finished 2010 there was one final Mid Week 3km run at Elephant Park where 48 keen and enthusiastic runners and walkers tried to rid themselves of all the Christmas Cheer and pudding they had consumed a couple of days earlier. There was some great family rivalries shown during the 3 km journey, with PB’s achieved by both Hugh Daintith and Anna Daintith (sorry don’t know the times), the ever improving Simon Lun, 42 sec PB and Kim Roweth who is a walker with a 64 sec PB. Kim was also the Handicap winner on the day showing the rest of her family who were running just how it is done.
Last Sunday we ventured out to Lake Canobolas for an attempt at either the 3km or 6km course around the lake as our first run for 2011. After watching the Dragon Boats training before we started everybody was ready for a big effort on a very hot morning. However with all the recent rain our course was changed and made just a little shorter and in some places wetter. This also made for some very quick times recorded as people tried to avoid the water and mud. The winner on the day was Estelle Dean with a very quick 26min 38sec for the 5.4km course.
After the run the Lake looked so inviting for a cool down that many of the members decided to go for a swim. However the first couple in found the temperature a lot cooler than they expected, when more and more asked how was it they kept saying it was great but the reactions upon entering the water were priceless.
On Wednesday we had our first Midweek 3km Handicap run for 2011. With rain having fallen in the previous couple of hours and the skies threatening more it was decided to have a group start just in case. A Handicappers nightmare. 49 runners and walkers took off at great speed in the hope of not getting wet but also trying to record good times. The winner on the day was Simon Lun in a blistering time of 14.39, he also recorded a new PB of 27secs, his third in as many weeks. Lookout Simon the Handicapper will get you real soon.
This Sundays run is at Bargwanna Road over the distances of 3km, 5km and 10km. It is also a NO WATCH RUN, which means you have to nominate your distance and the time you will complete it in before you start. The closest to their time is the winner. Easier said than done. Don’t forget we start at 9am.
Entries for this years Colour City Fun Run on 6th March are now open. You can do distances of 5km 10km or Half Marathon (21.1km) over some of Oranges best and very scenic running tracks. Just go to the clubs website at Orangerunners.com.au and click on the Festival link to register. Remember if you get your entry in real quick you are in the running to win a Fridge supplied by Electrolux as part of the Early Bird Competition.
Anybody who would like to do some training for the Fun Run are invited to join club members at Elephant Park at 6-15am for 6-30 start each Saturday morning. You don’t have to do the big distances, you decide when you want to finish. Runners and walkers are most welcome.
