Grenfell and New Elephant Park Run
The sun was shining on Saturday morning so 14 of us headed over to Grenfell to compete in the Henry Lawson Fun Run. It was an 8 km and 4 km event and well suited to any mountain goats in the vicinity. We went up and up before it eventually evened out and then to add insult to injury we had another 10 hills to face before the nice downhill run to the finish line. As you all know the writer is allergic to hills so I was doing plenty of muttering by the time I finished. Despite this we all agreed it was good to have participated and following the event we joined the townsfolk of Grenfell and enjoyed the stalls, side shows, music and of course the food. ORC took out line honours at the event with Mitch Williamson blitzing the course and 1st runner home in the time of 28.24 ahead of 10 time winner Tom Gleeson. Laura Wolfson and her mother Christine were the first women home in the princely time of 35.33. Kyle Ostini was the first junior male to cross the line in the time of 33.48. Well done to you all. President Frank did the course in the time of 34.33, just a tad behind his talented son, however Frank advised he had to stop as he got baled up on the course by some type of wild life; Frank you are running out of excuses.
In the 4km new club member Lily Craig crossed the line in the time of 28.30 and walker, John West also picked up a prize for his time of 37.32. Other times recorded were: David Craig – 37.00, Nicki Williamson – 38.45,Carrie Williamson – 39.04, Wayne Stewart – 43.09, Jane Fairgrieve – 44.16, Bill Fairgrieve 44.47. It certainly wasn’t a PB course but our trustee photographer, Sandy Ostini, advised she had a PB as she had to run from one side of the road to the other to catch runners passing by.
Sunday morning we gathered at the Botanical Gardens. It was rather cool when we started off but it didn’t take long to warm up. I have to make comment on little Lily Craig who is only 8 years old. This little girl did 4.80 km in the time of 26:10 and considering she did a tough 4 km at Grenfell the previous day it goes to show that she has plenty of determination and at this rate a great running future ahead of her. On Sunday it was lovely to welcome two new members who have joined our club, Kate and Cassie Brien. The ladies travelled down from Narromine in the morning to have a run with us; they hope to be able to complete in a lot of our events and we look forward to welcoming them again to our runs. PB’s of the day went to Lynda Chapman -1.23, Brett Sammut 5 minutes, Bill Fairgrieve, 42sec and Tony Fitzpatrick 4 secs. The handicap winner of the day was Joey Jones completing the 3.20 km course in the time of 20:51 . The handicapper will certainly be after you now Joey.
On 15 June 2011 six of our junior members attended the Western Cross Country Trails at Wellington . Times were recorded by Kyle Ostini – , Bryce Ostini -, Frehiwot Ward -, Charlotte Simmons -, and Grace Weekes
A few people still have chocolate money outstanding. Please arrange for your proceeds to be handed to Frank or China as soon as possible.
Also, please check the website as our new long sleeve running tops are available for viewing. Orders will be taken very shortly and only one order will be submitted for this year. We have a large number of running singlets for sale at the bargain price of $10.00. If you are new to the club please consider buying a singlet.
Windy weather prevailed for the Wednesday night run at Elephant Park, however that didn’t deter the following from achieving PB’s – Alison Kittel – 47 sec, Daryl Roweth – 4 sec, Anna Daintith – 39 sec, S R Eggleston – sec. S Richard Eggleston was also the handicap winner. Congratulations Richard.
Several of the children attended the Western Trials in Wellington on Wednesday. Sophie Tonkins and Bryce Ostini ran well and should be pleased with their results, but unfortunately missed out on selection for State. The following members ran hard and successfully gained selection into the State teams. Charlotte Simmons 2nd, Grace Weekes, 4th – both in the 11 year division. Frehiwot Ward 2nd and Lauren Kerwick 3rd both in the 12 years division, Kyle Ostini 2nd in the 14 years division and Josh Nagle 3rd in the 15 years division. Well done to you all and keep up your training with Frank so you are ready to face the other State competitors head on.
We welcome back our Treasurer, Stewart Vidler, who has been away training with the army reserve for a few weeks. Stewart also received his 200 run certificate on Wednesday night. Stewart should be on fire after all that training so we should expect to see lots of PB’s.
Sunday’s run is at Elephant Park , however it is a new run and our meeting place is Sampson Street/Lamrock Avenue end of Elephant Park . See you there.
